Grand Ole in Alexandria

Grand Ole in Alexandria (USA)

The biggest Viking America islocated in Alexandria (Minnesota). According to the giving, the area was once visited by the legendary Scandinavian seafarers. Across the street from the museum is just as mysterious rune stone is a giant statue of a Viking, which is popularly nicknamed "Big Ol» (Big Ole). The statue recalls the (probably erroneous) belief that Scandinavian explorers came to the area in the 1300s.

Grand Ole was built in 1965 for the World Exhibition in New York. At the statue of titanium, which reaches nine meters, you can also see the shield with a symbolic inscription adorned with the words "Alexandria - birthplace of America." After the exhibition "Viking" was sent to the small town of Alexandria (Minnesota), where it was set on a small traffic island.

In 1898, in a nearby village was discovered rune stone, which led to further archeological research. After much scientific debate in 1910 run stone was eventually found fake, but fell in love with the locals about the ancient history of the Vikings, who once visited this place. Now Alexander offers visitors a vacation on the beautiful lakes, which can be compared with the rest in the Leningrad region.

Against the background of the story "The Big Ol 'became a hit, but after the construction of the statue was not easy. Once we installed the statue in Alexandria Viking giant arrows shot by vandals, and once the composition nearly destroyed by strong gusts of wind. However, the locals love their hero, and they are happy to repair the monument after damage.
Today, the "Big Ol 'located opposite the Museum of runic stones in the town of Minnesota City, which houses a unique collection of exhibits, including the one stone, were led to believe that the discoverer of America was precisely the Scandinavian seafarers. Although, if we are to be honest to the end, the fact of the presence or absence of the Vikings on these lands cannot be considered until the end of proven, so we certainly await discovery in this direction.
